Simon Lewis has been a human and a vampire and now he is becoming a Shadowhunter. But the events of City of Heavenly Fire left him stripped of his memories, and Simon isn’t sure who he is any more. He knows he was friends with Clary and that he convinced the total goddess Isabelle Lightwood to go out with him… but he doesn’t know how. So when the Shadowhunter Academy reopens, he throws himself into a new world of demon-hunting, determined to find himself again, rediscover his relationships and ascend as a true Shadowhunter. But he soon realizes that nothing is ever straightforward at the Academy…
Title: Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy
Author: Cassandra Clare
Publication Date: 15th November 2016
Series: No, but it’s a book full of mini stories that comes after The Mortal Instruments, so DO NOT READ IT IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THAT.
This giant fat book (I’m serious. It’s giant.) is made up of 10 mini stories, so I wasn’t sure how to review it… So here you have 5 reasons why you should 😛 (Well, not ALL of you should. Seriously, go read the series first if you haven’t.) It’s actually perfect for bedtime reading because you can EASILY (sorta?) limit yourself to one story per night.
It’s told from the point of view of Simon
Great news for Simon fans.
Not so much for those that ain’t bothered about him. (Me.)
The entire book centres around Simon and his life in the Academy after the events of The Mortal Instruments. Not gonna lie, when I found out, I was totally icked out, because like…
Simon was just one of them side characters that I never cared about much. (Don’t kill me. *hides behind chair and offers cake*)
BUT THEN I FOUND OUT THAT SIMON IS ACTUALLY JUST WITNESSING AND HEARING ALL THE STORIES OF THE OTHER CHARACTERS~
Doesn’t mean that his own story gets ignored though 😛 Don’t worry Simonians. (Is that a word? Well it now is.) We get to see him and his life in the Academy and how he adapts to it. OHHHH AND ALSO NEW CHARACTERS~
Simon makes friends and it’s actually pretty cool.
Other special pumpkin characters make cameos
(Oh hell, I just called them pumpkins? O.O WAS NOT A CONSCIOUS MOVE. I’m still thinking Halloween.)
JULIAN MY BABY COMES IN~
Magnus and Alec’s child~
This book literally covers all the Shadowhunter series. You’ll actually be left begging for more, only to realise that’s the only short story they come in.
You even get to meet Will and Tessa’s CHILDREN! (Will is literally the best dad ever.)
Do you need more reasons as to why you should read this?
THERE ARE ILLUSTRATIONS~
Seriously. Cassandra Jean did a page of comics at the beginning of each story. AND THEY ARE THE BEST BITS~
Seriously, the entire book was done up so nicely~ *strokes book*
It gives you something to hug while you wait for Lord of Shadows~
There’s officially less than half a year left until Lord of Shadows comes out and I AM SO HYPED~ (Also slightly heartbroken because HALF A YEAR is still A LOT.) So if you’re suffering from Shadowhunter withdrawal or Julian withdrawal, this book might just help you hang in for a little while until Lord of Shadows comes out. (Spoilers: Julian and Emma make an appearance AND IT IS SO SO SAD.) There’s really not much time in each story for loads of development of characters, but that’s fine since it was only intended for people who have already read the books.
IT COMES WITH A PULL-OUT POSTER~
Is this a valid reason to get the book? Because for me, it always has been and always will be. Even though I NEVER DARE actually use the poster because it’s so precious and just opening it could potentially destroy it or set it on fire. I’m fine. I’m a completely rational human being.
Oh and on a totally different note, this colossus of a book looks crazy badass on your shelf. It will dwarf any other book you have on the shelf. (Actually a really bad thing if you have limited shelf space. Like me…)
I know not all fans will be reading this book, but will you?
