Kaz Brekker and his crew have just pulled off a heist so daring even they didn’t think they’d survive. But instead of divvying up a fat reward, they’re right back to fighting for their lives. Double-crossed and left crippled by the kidnapping of a valuable team member, the crew is low on resources, allies, and hope. As powerful forces from around the world descend on Ketterdam to root out the secrets of the dangerous drug known as jurda parem, old rivals and new enemies emerge to challenge Kaz’s cunning and test the team’s fragile loyalties. A war will be waged on the city’s dark and twisting streets―a battle for revenge and redemption that will decide the fate of magic in the Grisha world.

Title: Crooked Kingdom

Author: Leigh Bardugo

Publication Date: 27th September 2016

Series: Yes, it is the last book of the duology.

The Characters:

Inej is so strong and I think she may be my favourite girl of the gang <3 I love how she is literally a ninja~ MY SOUL AND HERS ARE LITERALLY CONNECTED. The tension between her and Kaz was literally all I lived for in this book. IT’S SO AGFSDGHSKF I CAN’T EVEN TALK ANYMORE. Them two are literally the SWEETEST pairing EVER, and I was practically yelling in front of their faces, “CONFESS YOUR LOVE.”

The tension between Nina and Matthias COMPLETELY evaporated, and I went from begging for more scenes of them in the first book to not caring about them anymore 🙁 I was so happy to see them finally resolve their issues with each other, but not even their scenes excited me anymore… This isn’t to say I don’t ship them, but I just wasn’t hyping over them like I did in the first book. :/

ALSO – Wylan and Jesper finally get going WHOOP. I’ll confess, I wasn’t hyped up about Jesper in the first book, and I couldn’t stand Wylan. I didn’t know much about them, and their characters weren’t anything special… (Wylan was this weak little imp and he just annoyed me.) In this book though, we learn so much more about these 2 characters and I grew quite fond of Wylan and even started liking Jesper. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, THEY GET TOGETHER~

The characters ARE SO FREAKINGLY COMPLEX. This paired with the equally gloriously complex plot really made this one heck of a read. AND THE SHIPS. I’ve probably just said something like this, BUT THE SHIPS. You will ship until you heart explodes. Unlike Sarah J. Maas, there aren’t pages and pages of intense make-out sessions, and the romance in this book is a lot more like “JUST CONFESS ALREADY.”

A CERTAIN PRIVATEER COMES BACK AND I TOTALLY DID NOT SCREAM. No spoilers but OMG I SCREAMED. (I feel sorry for my neighbours sometimes.)

The Plot:

Basically the first 25% of the book was Kaz going “I WANT INEJ BACK” and the rest of it was “I’m going to get my money back, and I’m going to make you pay for touching my lady.”

The entire book is just that. Except Kaz is this freaking genius with about 100 secret plans, and always has another 50 up his sleeve in case something goes wrong, while us readers are left in the dark.

There were beautiful-but-evil twists and I was HOOKED. (Probably mostly because of Inej and Kaz to be honest.) The book is pretty damn focused on the plot. No random detours. JUST. PLOT. PLOT. AND MORE PLOT. COMPLEX PLOT. GLORIOUS PLOT.

The Writing:

LEIGH FREAKING GENIUS BARDUGO KILLED ME IN THIS BOOK. So many things happened. The writing was brilliant, simple and easy to read. Also, it’s ultra cute how in Kaz POVs, Inej keeps coming up which shows perfectly that he’s always thinking of her. KAZ YOU’RE IN LOVE. JUST CONFESS ALREADY.

Everytime there’s a new chapter, the POV changes and Leigh often does this at the WORSE times ever. I’ll be reading, things will be getting intense, and SUDDENLY IT CHANGES AND I’M CURSING LEIGH because now I can’t sleep until I get to the next chapter with this POV so I can find out what happens.

Except when the POV changes, I’m still pissed because she just changed it at the worse time ever again.

I finished the book at 3am in the morning.

The Conclusion:

I WAS HOOKED. The book was a perfect balance of magnificent plot and complex characters with a variety of backgrounds. The characters are so lovable and my heart is so full <3 SHIPS. SHIPS. SHIIIIIIIPSSSSSS~

The writing was brilliant and the POV changes means that there’s so much going on, and basically it traps you into reading non-stop.

This book is pure genius. Everything links at the end and you’re left with nothing but tears and a VERY full heart.

  • Complex characters
  • Glorious plot

  • I wanted more Nina and Matthias 🙁

  1. OMG YAY CROOKED KINGDOM I’M GLAD YOU ENJOYED IT. I actually…kind of liked seeing Matthias & Nina be cute together? Idk, I get that there wasn’t much tension though, but I enjoyed seeing them flirting and happy. But THAT IS COOL, we liked different things haha! And I know what you mean about the POV changes. THEY BASICALLY KILLED ME. Agreed that Leigh Bardugo is a genius. (Maybe an evil genius.)
Yeah, no, I’m still kind of dying from this book. *flails*

    1. Yaaaaas I get what you mean, and I did too XD But maybe I’m just a horrible person that likes to see bad things because I missed the fighting more XD But at least they were happy for a while before Matthias…. *cries*
