Lady Midnight and Music 1
Warning: Minor spoilers

Hello there again! This time with a spontaneous post about matching music with books.

I’m not sure if you know this but I am not the type of person to blare Capital FM or stalk Ariana Grande as she tours. Basically, I mean I don’t listen to pop music that much but that doesn’t mean I don’t at all, I may have 1 or 2 on my phone…

I keep hearing this ONE song on the radio and the chorus stick with me, so I googled the lyrics and found the song and blah blah blah

I’m nowhere near finished with Lady Midnight and I’m sorta taking my time because I really don’t want it to end ;-;  Julian and Emma are the ultimate couple.

Now onto the actual post…

Little Mix – Secret Love Song

When you hold me in the street
And you kiss me on the dance floor
I wish that it could be like that
Why can’t it be like that? ‘Cause I’m yours

We keep behind closed doors
Every time I see you, I die a little more
Stolen moments that we steal as the curtain falls
It’ll never be enough
It’s obvious you’re meant for me
Every piece of you, it just fits perfectly
Every second, every thought, I’m in so deep
But I’ll never show it on my face

But we know this, we got a love that is homeless

Why can’t you hold me in the street?
Why can’t I kiss you on the dance floor?
I wish that it could be like that
Why can’t we be like that? ‘Cause I’m yours

[Jason Derulo:]
When you’re with him, do you call his name
Like you do when you’re with me? Does it feel the same?
Would you leave if I was ready to settle down?
Or would you play it safe and stay?

Girl you know this, we got a love that is hopeless

Why can’t you hold me in the street?
Why can’t I kiss you on the dance floor?

I wish that it could be like that
Why can’t we be like that? ‘Cause I’m yours

And nobody knows I’m in love with someone’s baby
I don’t wanna hide us away
Tell the world about the love we’re making
I’m living for that day
Someday

Why can’t I hold you in the street?
Why can’t I kiss you on the dance floor?

I wish that we could be like that
Why can’t we be like that? ‘Cause I’m yours, I’m yours

Oh, why can’t you hold me in the street?
Why can’t I kiss you on the dance floor?

I wish that it could be like that
Why can’t it be like that? ‘Cause I’m yours
Why can’t I say that I’m in love?
I wanna shout it from the rooftops
I wish that it could be like that
Why can’t we be like that? ‘Cause I’m yours

Why can’t we be like that?
Wish we could be like that

As you can see, I’ve put the lines that really rang with me in bold. The entire song matched with the book, though obviously you can interpret it in different ways. I felt it was more metaphorical and it was just the theme and the tone of sadness in the song that linked it. I’m not sure if that made sense BECAUSE I’M STILL SO CAUGHT UP IN THE FEELS so I’ll explain it further below:

It’s obvious you’re meant for me
Every piece of you, it just fits perfectly

This is pretty self-explanatory. EMMA AND JULIAN MAKE SUCH A GREAT PAIR. Emma and Julian are parabatai and that means they can’t get involved romantically and yeah, it’s obvious they’re meant for each other.

But I’ll never show it on my face

Not sure how the book develops, but where I’m at, Julian is constantly turning away from Emma and trying to stop his feelings developing further. He tries so hard to keep his face blank as to not betray his thoughts and feelings for her.

Why can’t you hold me in the street?
Why can’t I kiss you on the dance floor?
I wish that it could be like that
Why can’t we be like that?

They can’t kiss. They can’t display feelings for each other at all even though they want to. They want to tell each other and act like a normal couple. But they can’t because they’re parabatai ;-;

we got a love that is hopeless

Again, pretty obvious because like I said, they’re parabatai and it’s forbidden.

Why can’t I say that I’m in love?
I wanna shout it from the rooftops

THEY CAN’T. THEY CAN’T. IT’S FORBIDDEN AND I’M HERE, CRYING FOR THEM.

BASICALLY MY POINT IS THAT THIS SONG ILLUSTRATES PERFECTLY THR STRUGGLES OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP AND THAT YOU SHOULD REPLAY IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN WHILE YOU READ LADY MIDNIGHT. Replay it. Replay it over and over again until your family tells you to change the song because you;ve been playing it on speakers for the past 3 hours. (Not that I’m saying that happened to me…)

Now that you’ve read this post, what are your thoughts? Are you crying yet? BECAUSE YOU DAMN WELL SHOULD BE. Part 2 to this post is posted here!

    1. I have never heard of any other songs by them actually lol I rarely listen to pop but I’m really really glad I had found this song to be my companion while I cried buckets. Now that I’ve finished the book, the “dance floor” bit is more literal to me. (The Midnight Theatre dance.) I haven’t found that many songs that I can link to books actually, have you got any?

      1. There’s just certain lyrics, perhaps a line or two, that relate to little parts or chaptera within books I read that link quite well. Much like what you’ve said above really, certain lyrics stuck in head and related nicely.
